Jayden’s Story:
A Mischief Scenario
Scenario
Jayden is a 16-year-old Indigenous youth who lives in a small, close-knit community. After school one afternoon, Jayden and a few friends were hanging out near the community centre, a place where many local programs and gatherings take place. Out of boredom, they started throwing rocks to see who could throw the farthest.
During the game, Jayden picked up a larger rock and threw it with force. The rock went off course and smashed through one of the community centre’s windows. The sound startled people inside, and the glass scattered across the floor. Although no one was physically hurt, the damage forced the centre to close for the rest of the day, cancelling youth programming and disrupting community use of the space.
The police were called, and Jayden quickly admitted to throwing the rock. He said he hadn’t meant to cause harm and felt terrible seeing the damage. The event has sparked frustration in the community; some people are angry about the cost and inconvenience, while others see it as a chance for Jayden to learn and make amends in a good way.
A Restorative Justice Circle has been called to allow everyone involved to share how they were affected, help Jayden understand the ripple effects of his actions, and decide together what can be done to repair the harm and rebuild trust.
Characters in the Circle
Jayden (Youth who threw the rock) - 16 years old. Admits to causing the damage and feels embarrassed and guilty. Wants to take responsibility but hopes people will understand it was an accident.
M. Lee (Community Centre Coordinator) - Oversees programs at the centre. Feels disappointed that community property was damaged but believes in giving youth opportunities to learn from mistakes.
Jayden’s Mother (Caregiver/Parent) - Worried about her son’s choices and how this might affect his reputation. She supports accountability but wants to see Jayden encouraged, not punished.
Police Officer Sam (Community Police Liaison) - Attended the scene when the incident happened. Believes in community-based solutions and is open to restorative processes that help youth stay out of the justice system.
M. White Community Centre Staff Member (Crown Witness) – Runs after-school programs that were cancelled because of the damage. Feels frustrated about the disruption but wants to help Jayden stay engaged with positive community activities.
Tyler (Friend/Witness) - Was present during the rock-throwing game. Regrets not stopping it sooner and feels partly responsible for not speaking up.
Program Facilitator or Volunteer (Restorative Justice Facilitator) - Neutral guide who ensures that all voices are heard, keeps the circle focused on healing, and helps the group reach an agreement for how to make things right.
Elder Joseph (Knowledge Keeper/Elder - If Available) - Respected Elder in the community. Invited to open and close the circle with teachings about respect, responsibility, and restoring balance after harm.
“When we hurt the circle, we hurt ourselves. Healing begins when we come back together to make things right.”
